Miss an ENSO Phase III Science and Research or SODA Webinar?

Recorded Versions Are Available

Have you missed a Phase III GLOBE ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) Student Research Campaign Science and Research webinar or a Short Observation and Data Analysis (SODA) webinar? They are all being recorded and archived – for you to watch at your convenience. Just click here!

During Phase III of the campaign, there are two types of webinars being offered:

  • Monthly Science and Research Webinars – These webinars will focus on our guiding questions as we learn about research currently being conducted by scientists at NASA and around the world. We will also explore a variety of both GLOBE and non-GLOBE resources that can be used to enhance students’ understanding of the science behind the guiding questions.
  • The SODA Webinars – These webinars will focus on the data collected during the SODA protocol measurement period. Several schools (teachers and students) will present their data collection and what the data has told them about “Water in Our Environment.” Each school presenting at a SODA webinar will then collaborate with another school or schools taking some of the same measurements, answering the same questions. Schools can participate in more than one SODA event during the campaign. There is no limit on data collection.

To learn more about Phase III of the ENSO Student Research Campaign, click here To receive emails and to sign up for the webinars, click here.

The next Science and Research webinar will be held on 09 January. It will focus on the impact of water in Asia and the Pacific. To find out more, and to get updates on what time the webinar will be held, click here.

GLOBE Students/Alum: Share Your STEM Stories with the GLOBE Community

GLOBE is gathering stories of students, teachers, and alumni who have been influenced by their GLOBE experiences to pursue STEM education. We want to hear from:

  • current GLOBE students who intend to pursue further education in STEM;
  • former GLOBE students who are currently engaged in higher education in STEM areas or who have gone into STEM careers; and
  • teachers who have sought further training in STEM subjects, either through GLOBE training or through other professional development training, in order to enhance their capabilities as teachers or for new careers in STEM.

Download the template here. Need assistance? Send an email to help@globe.gov.

 Opportunities for Teachers

(U.S. opportunities are often highlighted in the News Brief because we are more aware of them through our local media; however, if there are opportunities for GLOBE students and/or teachers in your region that you would like us to highlight, please send the information to us at:

communications@globe.gov. Thank you!)

 NASA STEM Educator Webinars

The NASA STEM Educator Professional Development Collaborative (EPDC) is presenting a series of webinarsopen to all educators. All pre-service, K-12, and informal educators, as well as university faculty, are invited to join NASA education specialists to learn about NASA missions, activities, lesson plans, educator guides, and online resources that integrate NASA and STEM into the classroom.

An upcoming webinar, “How NASA Plans to Get Humans Back to the Moon,”  is geared toward educators in grades 4-10. On Monday, 22 January (6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT), the NASA EPDC at Texas State University is providing a one-hour webinar. It’s been 45 years since a crewed spacecraft journeyed toward the moon with a “trans-lunar injection,” but NASA plans to make that happen again in just a few years. The mission will take roughly 25.5 days, and its highlight will be putting the spacecraft in a lunar orbit that will take it farther from Earth than any other crew-capable spacecraft has been. Orion’s peak distance will be 270,000 miles (435,000 kilometers) from the planet – about 1,000 times the distance from Earth to the International Space Station. Find out how NASA will be doing this. Maybe a student in your classroom will be on board when we head to Mars.

Applications for the American Meteorological Society’s Early Career Leadership Academy Due 12 January

Applications for the American Meteorological Society’s (AMS) Early Career Leadership Academy (ECLA) are due 12 January. The ECLU aims to build and sustain a diverse network of early career leaders in weather, water, and climate science. ECLA will bring together a select group of early career individuals (in particular, women and underrepresented minorities) for an immersion experience in leadership, such as creative problem-solving; conflict resolution; and building trust and enhancing communication skills. GISN Members and STEM Professionals: Judges and Mentors Needed for the 2018 IVSS

Calling all GLOBE International STEM Network (GISN) members/STEM professionals – your skills, abilities, and expertise are needed for the 2018 GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS):

  • Scoring Projects: In March 2018, the GIO will need your assistance with scoring the student projects. There will be an informational webinar in March, and judging will take place from 18-24 March. Judging will consist of filling out a Google form with your scores and feedback. (NOTE: You do not need a GLOBE account to score projects.)
  • Mentoring Students: We need volunteer STEM professionals to assist student researchers. Students may have questions about a science topic or the research process in general. Please view the “Students Needing Mentors” page for mentoring opportunities.

If you are interested in judging or volunteering, please fill out this form. You will be contacted in February; however, if you have any questions please send an email to: help@globe.gov.

(NOTE to GISN Members: Remember, starting in 2018, all GISN members will be required to do one GISN-related activity per year. This is a great way to pay it forward!)

Participating in the GLOBE Urban Heat Island / Surface Temperature

Student Research Campaign? Read Dr. C’s latest Blog – Thanking You

This year, the Urban Heat Island Effect – Surface Temperature Field Campaign studied the urban heat island effect in seasons – October, December, and March (2018). The campaign is focused on looking at the impact urbanization has on the Earth’s surface temperature and how the surface temperature changes the dynamics of the Earth’s atmosphere. Studying the energy cycleis fundamental to understanding how the Earth’s spheres function within its system.

In a December blog, Dr. Kevin Czajkowski (Dr. C, from the University of Toledo, Ohio, USA), the developer of the surface temperature protocol, posted a blog – thanking all who have been taking observations for this campaign. As he states in his blog, “It is your data that will allow other students to create interesting research projects as well as providing a database for me and my students to conduct research. We have schools all over the world taking surface temperature observations to contribute to the campaign.”

By mid-December, 69 schools had entered 1,323 observations!
