The Republic of Botswana

“It’s a privilege and a deep honor for me to join you today in this important signing ceremony for our two governments,” Don Brown, who serves as the Regional Environment Officer at the American Embassy in Gaborone, said. “Botswana is the third country in southern Africa and the 27th on the continent to sign this agreement.”

“With today’s signing,” Brown said, “our governments are agreeing to connect students, teachers, scientists, and citizens of Botswana to their peers in the program worldwide to conduct real, hands-on science about their local environment and share their findings. This may even shape their career decisions and allow them to work collaboratively with children on opposite sides of the planet.”

Minister of Basic Education Bagalatia Arone agreed that the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement was a momentous occasion. “Nothing excites me as much as the discussion on environmental issues,” he said. “It is therefore befitting for us to come up with an initiative like the one to teach our students about the importance of environmental issues and how they can go about protecting the environment.”

The GLOBE Implementation Office welcomes the Republic of Botswana, the 121st country to participate in The GLOBE Program.

In a recent blog, Dr. Tony Murphy, Director of the GLOBE Implementation Office (GIO), shares his thoughts and impressions of the 2018 GLE. In his blog, Dr. Murphy also expresses his hope that everyone who attended the GLE was able to leave Killarney (his home town) with special memories and stories of friendship, both new and renewed. He invites everyone who attended the event to share their stories or comments about the GLE.

Add the New Virtual Badge to Your GLOBE “My Page”

To add the virtual badge to your profile:

1. Login to globe.gov.

2. Click on the down arrow next to your name (in the upper right-hand corner of the Homepage).

3. Click on “My Page” (from the dropdown list).

4. When you see your profile page, click on the “edit” button at the bottom/middle of the page.

5. In the content box, click on the “Source” icon (top right).

6. Paste the following code into the source content box (make sure to include all of it):

There are now 49 eTraining modules available (including modules introducing The GLOBE Program and covering all four protocol areas – Atmosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, and Pedosphere).

Once your training is complete, you will be ready to start entering your measurements and will be joining a community of thousands of teachers around the world!

·     Mission EARTH: Fusing GLOBE with NASA Assets to Build Systematic Innovation in STEM Education GLOBE Mission EARTH is a collaborative of multiple institutions across the United States formed to increase involvement in The GLOBE Program with the goal of connecting students to scientists in the common pursuit of real-world science.

·     AEROKATS and ROVER Education Network (AREN) – The goal of AREN is to train the next generation of scientists, engineers, and other professionals to observe and understand our planet Earth through experiential learning using NASA technology and data in real-world settings.

·     Impacts and Feedbacks of a Warming Arctic: Engaging Learners in STEM using NASA and GLOBE Assets (Arctic and Earth SIGNs) – This program connects youth and adults to climate issues and Earth science learning through inquiry-based GLOBE investigations and community stewardship projects.

·     NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative (NESEC) – This represents a partnership between four GLOBE partners: the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and NASA Earth science divisions at three NASA Centers: Goddard Space Flight Center, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Langley Research Center. NESEC is enhancing STEM teaching and learning by creating engaging, meaningful, and authentic STEM experiences and resources. NESEC’s interrelated activities and partnerships include citizen science with 1) ) GLOBE Observer, 2) GLOBE student investigations with NASA, and 3) strategic partnerships and collaborations.

An upcoming webinar, “Explore Space Tech: Robotics on a Budget,” is geared toward educators in grades 4-8. On Thursday, 30 August (6:00 p.m. ET), the NASA EPDC at Texas State University is providing a one-hour webinar. Robots are a part of everyday life, but what exactly are they? How are robots used in our lives? How are they used at NASA? Explore answers to these questions and learn how to use robotics inexpensively in your classroom by integrating NASA STEM robotic missions, curriculum and online resources.
