August 2018 GLOBE News Brief

GLOBE Welcomes New Partnering County:

The Republic of Botswana

Minister of Basic Education, Honorable Bagalatia Arone (right), and

Ambassador Miller (left) hold the signed GLOBE Agreement

On 26 June 2018, Ambassador of the United States Earl R. Mille, on behalf of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Minister of Basic Education Bagalatia Arone signed an agreement to implement The GLOBE Program in Botswana at a signing ceremony in Gaborone.

“It’s a privilege and a deep honor for me to join you today in this important signing ceremony for our two governments,” Don Brown, who serves as the Regional Environment Officer at the American Embassy in Gaborone, said. “Botswana is the third country in southern Africa and the 27th on the continent to sign this agreement.”

“With today’s signing,” Brown said, “our governments are agreeing to connect students, teachers, scientists, and citizens of Botswana to their peers in the program worldwide to conduct real, hands-on science about their local environment and share their findings. This may even shape their career decisions and allow them to work collaboratively with children on opposite sides of the planet.”

Minister of Basic Education Bagalatia Arone agreed that the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement was a momentous occasion. “Nothing excites me as much as the discussion on environmental issues,” he said. “It is therefore befitting for us to come up with an initiative like the one to teach our students about the importance of environmental issues and how they can go about protecting the environment.”

Read GIO Director Dr. Tony Murphy’s Blog on the 2018 GLE — Then Share Your Thoughts!

The 2018 GLOBE Learning Expedition (GLE), held in Killarney, Ireland (01-06 July), served as a memorable, and motivational, gathering of GLOBE students, teachers, STEM professionals, scientists, and program staff and sponsors. The GLE, held every four years, provides the venue for GLOBE community members to come together to learn about GLOBE protocols, share research, enjoy a variety of cultural exchanges, create enduring friendships, and establish collaborative connections. In 2018, almost 400 participants from 39 countries attended the sixth GLE.

In a recent blog, Dr. Tony Murphy, Director of the GLOBE Implementation Office (GIO), shares his thoughts and impressions of the 2018 GLE. In his blog, Dr. Murphy also expresses his hope that everyone who attended the GLE was able to leave Killarney (his home town) with special memories and stories of friendship, both new and renewed. He invites everyone who attended the event to share their stories or comments about the GLE.

If you haven’t had a chance to view the video highlighting the 2018 GLE, click here! This video was created for the participants of the GLE on the occasion of the final dinner on 05 July 2018. It is GLOBE’s tradition to present this “Week in Review” before everyone parts company. It is now being shared with everyone to convey the spirit of the event.

Teachers! Ready to Join the GLOBE Community?

Attend a Workshop or Experience eTraining!

Teachers: Are you ready to join The GLOBE Program and connect your classrooms to an international network of students, teachers, and scientists in order to learn more about our shared environment? For a school to fully participate in The GLOBE Program, at least one teacher must be trained in GLOBE science measurement protocols and education activities by attending a GLOBE Teacher Workshop or by completing the required online eTraining modules.

To check on workshops in your area, click here.

No training workshops in your area? Check out GLOBE’s protocol eTraining, which offers teachers a powerful online portal to access the training materials necessary to lead a classroom in data collection and lab procedures associated with a GLOBE protocol. There are now 49 eTraining modules available (including modules introducing The GLOBE Program and covering all four protocol areas – Atmosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, and Pedosphere).

Once your training is complete, you will be ready to start entering your measurements and will be joining a community of thousands of teachers around the world!

Were You a GLOBE Student? Now You’re Working in a STEM Field? Then Please Share Your Story!

Were you a GLOBE student? Are you now working in a STEM field? GLOBE is gathering stories of GLOBE students who have been influenced by their GLOBE experiences to either pursue STEM education or who are now working in a STEM-related career.

GLOBE would also like to hear from teachers who have sought further training in STEM subjects, either through GLOBE training or through other professional development training, in order to enhance their capabilities as teachers or for new careers in STEM.

Share your story today – inspire others to dive into STEM! Download the template here.

If you need assistance, send an email to help@globe.gov.

GLOBE Teachers: Share Your GLOBE-related STEM Learning Activities with the GLOBE Community!

GLOBE Teachers: Do you do STEM-related activities as part of your GLOBE curriculum or trainings? The GLOBE Program would greatly appreciate you sharing your learning activities with teachers throughout the worldwide GLOBE community! (If you are located in the United States, GIO is especially interested in activities that have been aligned with NGSS.)

When you use the tool, can select search parameters including: language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish) grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12), time requirement (any time requirement, continuing student activities, one-time, and repeated class activities), standard requirement (any standard, NGSS), documents for investigation, and/or protocol-specific documents.

If you have questions about this effort, send us an email at help@globe.gov.

Opportunities for Teachers

(U.S. opportunities are often highlighted in the News Brief simply because we are more aware of them through our local media; however, if there are opportunities for GLOBE students and/or teachers in your region that you would like us to highlight in the coming months, please send the information to: communications@globe.gov. Thank you!)

NASA STEM Educator Webinars

The NASA STEM Educator Professional Development Collaborative (EPDC) is presenting a series of webinars open to all educators. All pre-service, K-12, and informal educators, as well as university faculty, are invited to join NASA education specialists to learn about NASA missions, activities, lesson plans, educator guides, and online resources that integrate NASA and STEM into the classroom.

An upcoming webinar, “Explore Space Tech: Robotics on a Budget,” is geared toward educators in grades 4-8. On Thursday, 30 August (6:00 p.m. ET), the NASA EPDC at Texas State University is providing a one-hour webinar. Robots are a part of everyday life, but what exactly are they? How are robots used in our lives? How are they used at NASA? Explore answers to these questions and learn how to use robotics inexpensively in your classroom by integrating NASA STEM robotic missions, curriculum and online resources.
